2014 Celebrating 20 years of Petunia Baskets

  • Volunteer project of Rice Lake Main Street Association (not a project of the city)
  • Volunteers fund the purchase of baskets each year by facilitating the Petunias Unlimited Banquet
  • Volunteers install the baskets on the street poles in early June
  • Volunteers provide daily watering and weekly fertilizing of baskets
  • Volunteers remove and compost baskets each fall
  • RLMSA owns, licenses and maintains watering truck
  • First truck donated by Myron & Evy Mommson
  • Annual Petunias Unlimited Fundraising Banquet
  • Area business and citizen support of project
  • Petunia baskets on the street average 15 weeks / year
  • 25 plants per basket
  • more than  30,000 petunia plants over the life of this project
  • 225 volunteer hours / year just to water
  • more than 200 individuals directly involved with care
  • 4500 hours of watering in 20 years!
  • watered every morning 6:00 AM

  • 1994 first year hanging baskets installed downtown
  • 1997 WDAC (Wisconsin Downtown Action Council) Award for Petunias Unlimited Banquet
  • 2000  second truck donated  by RLU, (retired fleet truck)
  • 2003 Petunias Unlimited named Best Creative Fund Raising Effort by Wisconsin Main Street
  • 2006 partnership connection established with RL Lions Club
  • 2006 Petunia Basket project named Best Volunteer Development by Wisconsin Main Street
  • 2011 third truck donated by RL Lions Club
